For the Birds

The winged conclave commenced.
Merlin chirped the meeting to order.
He gradually took attendance
After enabling the app’s recorder.

The Usuals noted their presence.
Of course, the sparrow sang.
The Blue Jay ruffled some feathers
From lower branches a Chickadee sprang.

Twenty six birds attended,
Which wasn’t bad for a district meeting.
But, it had to come to order.
The woods were loud with tweeting.

Indeed a Robbin bobbed.
A Pewee defended its moniker.
All this, while the Red-Tailed Hawk
Sounded its screechy harmoniker!

The Killdeer came remarkably close
To imitating the Sandpiper.
But the morning was damp.
He’d a done better with a windshield wiper.

The Red-eyed Vireo proposed a motion.
He made certain this was the proper forum.
Were enough birds in attendance?
Yes, with the House Wren they had a quorum.

It was a parliamentary maneuver,
Known as a Motion To Request.
Fly away for a while.
Then fly home to work on your nest.

It had long been a rite of passage,
As first practiced by the Thrushes
But later all birds wondered
Why every bird rushes?

The question was brought before the Board.
The Oriole made an impassioned plea.
But not about the current motion,
Rather the one from the Chickadee.

Wait just a second, the Catbird meowed,
I have a nagging point of order,
Before these Sparrows get way too proud.
I say keep them behind the border.

Just to start, there’s the Chipping Sparrow.
The Field Sparrow, then the Song.
Already the Sparrow voter list
Is getting way too long.

There was grumbling betwixt the branches.
Many birds seemed to agree.
If Sparrow numbers aren’t curtailed,
They’ll be increasing their majority

Now just a minute, the Tom Turkey groused.
Floor Chairman Merlin, if I could?
We’re starting to sound like humans,
And, Mr. Chairman, that isn’t good!

Tom Turkey’s words were profound .
All birds hung their heads in shame.
They were sounding much like humans
All birds shared a bit of blame.

Alas for Sparrow, alas for Wren
For all feathered friends where or when.
God praise them all who renders their call
And sweetens the world for us all.
