Was this a birthday gift ?
If so, what was its intent ?
My wife said that for my birthday
This would be my present!

That I should write a poem, she said.
That verse should be my quest.
“Give it all you’ve got”, she says.
Make it your very best.

“Wait a minute”, I stammered.
“You’re calling this a gift”?
I get to sit and work all day?
Well, in every river there’s a rift!

I guess I’ll get through it.
Sit the day long at home.
You get to read my present
And I got to write this poem!

Some say I got hoodwinked
Or, is bamboozled the word.
Before my birthday was over,
I wasn’t sure what occurred!
